After all if you don't take it seriously, why would the police do it for you? U-haul will hide behind 'but someone else was the driver' while they know full well that's not legally relevant. But they're banking on a percentage of people just taking it and paying for the damages themselves. So they're silent hoping that you're a doormat and it'll go away. It'll save U-haul money and further increase their profits. Send them a regular AND sign-to-receive letter announcing they are liable and will receive the bill. You'll need proof of their awareness later. If they don't pay the eventual bill, don't waste time going back and forth, get a court payment verdict then start having U-haul's vehicles towed with the prospect to sell them at auction. Or go the extra mile and have bailiffs seize their office equipment since all of it will have to go to cover 14K so U-haul would be devastated if it came to that. Want to bet they'll talk if it's impossible to ignore you because you have their stuff? Debt collection against unscrupulous businesses can be a lot of fun and very healing. 😉

I have a friend who had his Tesla rear ended recently here in CA, and then the guy left the scene (hit & run). My friend called the police right away, but they never came and did nothing afterward either, so my friend's insurance has to pay for the damages now. No wonder why there are more hit & run these days, because (like the raise of shoplifting), people know they can easily get away with it, because the police doesn't care. However, don't you dare not wearing your seatbelt for 2mn while pulling out of your driveway, you will have 10 cops jumping on you. 😬
